UKFortuna was formed in 2013 firstly as a Twitter account before spreading to Facebook, Instagram and now this.
Coming up to our 5th anniversary ukfortuna.co.uk was launched with the aim to take UKFortuna to the next step and offer Membership, Merchandise and more.
I (Chris) attended my first Fortuna match at the end of the 2012-13 season when Fortuna were finally back in the Bundesliga after a long absence and falling as low as the fourth tier of German football. Norbert Meier had masterminded the ascent through the leagues and going into the final two matchdays survival was still in our own hands.
The opponents on the day of my first match were 1.FC Nürnberg, and a match that was unfortunately lost 1-2, but results conspired aginst us in the final two games of the season and Fortuna were relegated tot he 2.Bundesliga.
But I was hooked on Fortuna. I'd visited with two friends and we ended up sitting at the back of the Warsteiner tribune with fellow day-trippers, and one elderley local with a whistle and rattle who did try and make conversation with us be we spoke next to zero German! We were blown away by the two sets of fans and the noise that they made supporting their team. I've been a Newcastle United season ticket holder for many years and was feeling alienated by the regime of Mike Ashley and the dire football under Alan Pardew, I'd had enough of Ashley treating NUFC and St James' Park as another branch of Sports Direct and was looking for something new. I found this in Düsseldorf.
The city of Düsseldorf is in some ways a lot like Newcastle, it's set along a great river, capital of its region, with a bustling nightlife and reformed from its previous industrial history. The Altbier is also a lot like Newcastle Brown Ale!
So I kept coming back, first experiencing my first match on the terraces of the ESPRIT Arena, where a 2-2 draw opened the 2014-15 season against Eintracht Braunschweig. I went to my first away game at Union Berlin (another 1-1) in 2015-16, first derby against MSV Duisburg (1-2), season opening weekend (1-2 defeat by Malaga) and FINALLY a first win at the end of the 2016-17 season securing 2.Bundesliga survival against Nürnberg away in Bavaria.
Through the magic of Social Media I've made some great friends, either locals or Brits who live locally or visit for games, and this is why I wanted to take UKFortuna to the next step of Membership etc., to bring the club to more fans outside of Germany who can come and visit this lovely, welcoming city!
Thanks for checking the site out, and hopefully I'll see you at a game sometime!
